On Thursday, July 21, 2022, Abubakar Malami, the AGF and Minister of Justice,
made a suggestion regarding this.
After the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, which was held at the
Presidential Villa in Abuja under the chairmanship of President Muhammadu
Buhari, Malami dropped the clue while speaking to media at the State House.
Why the ban is important According to Malami, investigations have revealed
that nationwide mining operations use motorcycles.
The restriction, he continued, might cut off terrorists’ and criminals’ access
to funding.
Malami added that the country’s motorbike use needed to be outlawed since
terrorists were no longer funding their operations through traditional means,
but rather through mining and ransoming, according to Daily Trust.
He claims that criminals travel on motorcycles and utilize the money they get
from mining to buy weapons.
In response to a query on how the ban would affect common Nigerians and the
economy, the AGF stated that the FG would put national and public interests
ahead of private interests.
Okada operations have recently been prohibited in six Local Government Areas
of Lagos State by the state’s government.
Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa are the six
LGAs.
The prohibition was made public a few days after David Imoh, a sound engineer,
was allegedly killed and his body set afire by some motorcycle drivers in the
state’s Lekki district.
